Even as a kid Halloween wasn’t THE big holiday for me. I wasn’t a big candy freak. But year after year I would dress, trick or treat or attend a party in the spirit of this most ghoulish event. None of my childhood costumes really stand out expect for two.
The Hobo: Yes, we called them hobos back then. I don’t think we even knew what homelessness was. Ripped overhauls and a plaid shirt complete with a Vaseline smeared face to hold the Folgers coffee grounds
Punk Rocker: I think I dyed me hair pink, wore some flamboyant shirt I got from my brother Martin (he was working for Damon clothes at the time and had quite a home collection). I put a strand of large, cheap, plastic pearls around my neck and hung an stiletto from the chain. Lame. Very lame. It was the 80s. I was trying.
As an adult my four favorites are:
Elroy Jetson. Netted me a first prize in our work costume party. The costume was amazing and made by an LA fashion designer early in his career. WAY early.
Dennis The Menace. Continued my cartoon boy streak with an easy to assemble costume…mostly with clothes from my closet. I was still cute however.
Richie Rich. Tuxedo and all with little black shorts. FUN!
And, let’s not forget last years’ costume I wore to FEZ and to The Clarendon Hotel party: Punk Rock Hello Kitty! Complete with "piercings", safety pins, a black cut off tshirt with Hello Kitty bedazzled prominently in the middle, black kitty ears, whiskers (thank you Maybelline!) and some fitted, black and white checkered jeans complete with a tail. It was purrrrfect!
What are you favorite costumes throughout the years?
