Well. It's time to officially come of the closet. I mean really after all these years...the hiding...the shame...the secret rendevous. Yep. I'm just going to come out and say it! I. I. I...um...well, I, I love Velveeta. OK! There! I said it. I'm out and proud. I'm cheesy. Sometimes queasy. SO GET USED TO IT!
Now that the weight has been lifted, I think it's important to share my very first Velveeta experience. And I've hundreds of them since. Usually shared with my dad as he is the inventor of this culinary masterpiece. I don't know exactly how old I was when dad made my first California Sandwich. But I believe it was shortly after I finished teething. And to this day when I'm hanging in Sun City (yes, I know, God's Waiting Room)...dad will whip out his Velveeta (does that sound weird to anyone else?) and create yet another foodie bonding moment with me.
Here goes:
Californa Sandwich (serves 2)
3 hot dogs (boiled, microwaved, grilled...whatever floats your boat)
2 slices of white bread lightly toasted
4 thick slices of Velvetta baby!
1 can of Van de Kamp Pork N Beans
Ketchup (optional)
Place toasted bread on aluminum lined cookie sheet. After cooking the hot dogs and heating up the beans...it's time to assemble! Slice each hot dog down the middle placing 1 1/2 on each slice of bread. Load up a big spoonful of pork n beans on top and then top that with the Velveeta. Broil for a few minutes...watching VERY closely so as not to burn the cheese. A little squeeze of ketchup if you like (I prefer no ketchup).
Grab a fork and napkin. Serve with cold glass of milk.
Mmmmmm!
